Where Are The Black Sheep?

Writer: John PriceJohn Price

As Black Sheep Social gears up for its launch, I took a few days to recharge in the Lake District with Jess and our Golden Retriever, Poppy. We headed to Bowness-On-Windermere, a place that felt like the perfect blend of relaxation and inspiration. Staying at Keepers Cottage, we spent our days exploring scenic walking trails, enjoying local food, and, of course, taking in all that this unique part of the country has to offer. Here’s a quick look at our adventure—a mix of good food, great views, and some lighthearted moments that brought a fresh perspective before diving back into the world of business.

Chapter 1: Pre-Launch Escape to Bowness-On-Windermere

As Black Sheep Social’s launch approached, I decided to take a few days away to clear my mind and find some inspiration before everything kicked off. Along with Jess and Poppy, our dog, I headed to Bowness-On-Windermere in the Lake District, a place known for its natural beauty and calm atmosphere. We stayed in Keepers Cottage, a cozy spot with just the right mix of charm and comfort, providing a perfect

setting to recharge.

Bowness offered plenty to explore, from picturesque lake views to scenic walking routes. Each day, we set out on a new path, taking in the tranquil surroundings, which were especially vibrant with the autumn colors. Local trails around Lake Windermere provided scenic, easily accessible routes, great for both seasoned hikers and those just out for a stroll. It was an ideal area to step away from daily routines, and the quiet provided a helpful change of pace to think clearly about Black Sheep Social’s upcoming launch.

In the evenings, we returned to Keepers Cottage, where Poppy would settle in, exhausted from the day’s explorations. These few days were refreshing, offering a moment to pause and get ready for the excitement and challenges ahead.

Chapter 2: Local Food & Drink

Bowness-On-Windermere has such a diverse food scene, with options ranging from casual treats to more unique dining experiences. On our first morning, we stopped by The Cornish Bakery, known for its selection of pastries and baked goods. Their cherry and almond croissant was a highlight: the sweet-tart flavour of cherry balanced with almond, a perfect way to start the day.

For dinner, we tried Urban Food House, a local restaurant that offered hearty, fresh dishes with a laid-back vibe. The next evening, we visited Baha, a BBQ spot known for its lively setting and flavourful options. The food was satisfying, with rich, smoky flavours that hit the spot after a day of exploring.

After one of our longer walks, we wound down at Boaters Bar, where I enjoyed a pint of dark cider, a perfect pairing with the Lake District’s cool air. Jess also tried the cider, which turned out to be stronger than expected and gave her a bit of a wobble—a funny reminder of the strength of local brews. Each stop introduced us to another side of Bowness, making the trip both enjoyable and memorable.

Chapter 3: Walking Trails and Scenic Routes

One of the highlights of the trip was taking advantage of the numerous walking trails that surround Bowness. Lake Windermere’s shoreline was both scenic and serene, offering trails with varied levels of difficulty and views that ranged from open water to wooded paths. Poppy particularly enjoyed these walks, eagerly exploring every new scent and sound.

Our most challenging walk was up Brant Fell, a popular hiking spot with a steep climb that rewards with an expansive view over the lake and the town below. At the summit, the landscape opened up in every direction, creating a moment to pause and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us.

Interestingly, despite encountering plenty of herds along the way, we didn’t see a single black sheep—a funny coincidence for Black Sheep Social’s founder. The walk, surrounded by these iconic animals, added a bit of humour to the trip and reminded me of Black Sheep Social’s ethos of standing out among the crowd.

Exploring Bowness provided exactly the kind of reset I’d hoped for, with its relaxing walks, welcoming food scene, and a few local quirks.
